The archaeological remains of Kourion are the most impressive on the island. The city-kingdom was built on the hills to control and overlook the fertile valley of the river Kouris. Archaeological findings suggest that Kourion was associated with the Greek city of Argos in the Peloponnese and that its inhabitants are believed to be descendants of immigrants from Argos. The once flourishing kingdom was destroyed in a severe earthquake in 365 A.D. The magnificent Greco-Roman theatre, which is the main attraction on the site, has been restored and now is used for open air concerts and theatrical performances.
