Famagusta is a city located on the east coast of Cyprus and is well-known as the city with the deepest harbour. During medieval times, it was the island’s most important port city and a gateway for trade for many merchants carrying their goods to Western Europe. The city was founded around 274 B.C., remained a small village for a long time and was later transformed into a small port. The turning point for Famagusta was in 1192 with the onset of Lusignan rule. It increased the importance of the Eastern Mediterranean due to its natural harbour and walls protecting its inner town. The development progressed and in the 13th century it became the centre of commerce for both East and West. Growing and developing through the centuries and under different rulers, Famagusta remained an important port and business centre. In the late 1960s the city became one of the world best-known entertainment and tourist centres. In 1974 the economic activity and contribution of Famagusta to the country’s economy exceeded its proportional dimensions within the country. In the early 70’s it was the number one tourist destination with beautiful beaches. Since the invasion of 1974, the Varosha part of the city has been fenced-off and remains so up to the present day.
