There has been a harbour at Kyrenia since at least the 10th century B.C. Excavations have revealed traces of Greek origin from even earlier times. However, it was developed into a city under Roman rule. The original castle, which was almost completely destroyed in a Genoese attack in 1373, was built by the Byzantines in the 7th century. The 16th century castle that we see nowadays was built by the Venetians. Within the walls of the castle there is a 12th century chapel and a shipwreck museum, which exhibits the remains of a Greek merchant ship from the 4th century B.C., one of the oldest vessels ever to be discovered together with its cargo. The 14m hull, made of Aleppo pine, is preserved in a well-controlled environment and is definitely worth a visit.
