Stavrovouni Monastery is located on the top of a hill of the same name. The monastery was founded around 327 A.D. by Saint Helena, the mother of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine I (Constantine the Great). It is amongst the oldest monasteries in the world and the earliest documented monastery on the island believed to have had the Holy Cross. During its long history, the monastery has endured many difficulties and hardships caused by numerous foreign invasions of the island and a great fire in 1888. The only relic preserved to the present day is the silver cross into which a minute piece of the Holy Cross was inserted. An easy ride through forest roads will bring you to this quiet and majestic place. The breath-taking view will stay in your memory forever.
